Hello there patfromcanada!

cheers for ur post, the encouragement etc...

I think what i was trying to say is similar to what Jamey was saying but it all came out arse about tit when i tried to say it! i.e. technology is a tool - particularly liked this one:

"some tools can make your job easier and others can help spark hidden creativity"

technology can also challenge you're creativity, depending on the piece of equipment, the user and the level of experience the user has had. I can remember a time not so long ago, when i didn't know where the sounds came from when u were sequencing stuff in cubase - or cakewalk as i was sometimes using back then, i just didn't have a clue about anything technical (still a novice now). i had such intricate ideas and was really disapointed when i found it wasn't that easy to just make them happen so i got a bit dispondent. u know, like hearing a bassline with certain accents and a distinctive specific sound (usually half-remembered from something i'd heard in a club), then realising the limitations i had. i've realised that to be that organic with the equipment whereby u more or less know how to get a certain sound takes a lot of pissing around, and then a lot of experience of having pissed around. i think cuz i was doing stuff with lads too (it's not really a girly thing, huh!), u really have to prove yourself as a lass, otherwise they won't give you much of a chance, if it weren't for the fact that i can actually play an instrument i don't think anyone would have taken me seriously at all. these days, because i'm getting more fluent with the technology and my ideas now have a form and u can hear what i'm trying to do, ppl have been like "oh i see", so that initial sex issue isn't such a problem anymore cause i can just go - "here, listen to this", feels betta! although i'm really not that bothered about being taken seriously anymore. i sometimes wonder what the hell i'm doing on a music tech course tho'. i mean how did carl craig or the 808 state lads learn all that stuff, not in lecture rooms for sure? surely if i had a natural flair for it, i could just get on with it and use manuals like any of the pioneers did in the 80's = pre-formal music technology courses. however i suppose i should think myself lucky. acutally, after the music tech course, thinking of taking it in a differnt direction for degree level, going for more of a music composition course. i think those kind of traditional music skills might b more use to me (writing short score, harmonic structure etc...) - seeing as tho' i'm not a natural techy!

how did u end up doing what u do patfromcanada?
