Hey all,
Graham, I can empathize with the "X-ray eyes" or rather, "X-ray ears" thang. I agree that it steals away a certain level of excitement in our listening pleasure with electronic music. However, (not to kiss ass) your works still give me a level of mystery. "How on earth did they get that expression on that track?". 808's werk is very organic and on another plain that defy most characteristics of the available production tools on the market. I have you guys up there with RL Burnside, Steely Dan, Weather report and Raymond Scott.
Heidi, the whole reason I ever got into this stuff was from listening to groups like Inner City(Kevin Saunderson), New Order, Kraftwerk, 808 state, Wee Papa Girl Rappers (don' ask), Pet Shop Boys, 2 Live Crew, Acid and Detroit House, Deee Lite, LFO (The british techno group NOT the boy band), any Shep Pettibone and Stephen Hauge works, Trevor Horn and Anne Dudley. I COULD GO ON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sorry.
All of that got me into Dj'ing over at these little clubs in Niagara Falls in the very early 90's. It's funny that you mentioned Father MC in one of your postings. I remember that!
Back then I would beat-mix early electro Miami Bass wax like "Don't stop the Planet Rock" and "Al Fyish". Even dropping Hip House beats Like Dj Fast Eddie's Acid track called "Hip House".
Then I got mixed up with plus 8 records stuff like John Aquaviva and Plastic Man. Deadly!
Basically, I was always amazed at the time because the of the unusual sounds that I received from all of those records. I used to get a potty rush I guess.
I had to discover what generated those tones. Now I'm cursed with not getting as excited cos' I'm not so ignorant anymore. It's sad really. Right now I'm working very hard ( outside of my Nintendo 3D art job) to discover something that thrills me. That is overall a huge challenge. It's an artist's true search I guess!
Here are two current records that have thrilled me 2 bits lately...
RL Burnside " An ass pocket of whiskey" a great blues album recorded with the John Spencer Group in RL's farm-house Kitchen! Very fresh! You should get this one Graham! It on Possum Record I think.
Sarah Cracknell " Lipslide" Pure pop at it's best.
Dimitri from Paris " SacreBlue!" yellow records. Probably one of the best sample collage records ever!
"Supreme Beings of Leisure" Very Fresh as well in many regards!
OK I gotta get back to work! And my spelling sucks!!!!!
