I sometimes feel like i'm stuck in a vacuum, between wanting to throw myself into the technology and finding out how everything works so i can move closer to making my tunes better and enjoying the innosense that graham was talking about, where i don't really listen to music and think in the back of my mind - "oh they've used that technique" etc... i wonder if there's a compromise? i incorporate lots of differenet techniques in music writing when i break it down, i tend to record keyboard parts with out Auto Quantise or a metronome and build up layers, othertimes i use a metronome and keep some elements really tight. i just think it's maybe about keeping things in perspective and not getting caught up in the shit aspects of music tech, things like that stupid mac v pc debate for instance or the analog v digital thing...at one point on my course, we were led to beleive that was all part of making music and u *should* have a point of view on it, but to be honest i don't, i come from a musical background therefore music interests me. computers are supposed to work, they number crunch. when they don't work, its a pain in the arse. what more?

I also think people who've reached their musical enlightenment (?!?) - i.e. early-mid teens - at different times during the digital progression will see the whole digital music thing differently, i suspect. i can remember hearing records while i was at middle school, that i now know were obviously made using a sampler and thinking - "wow thats amazing" - becuase i didn't think machines would be able to do that - the thought never occured to me, i thought it was real (er...der!), so i was more absorbed with the structure and the clarity of the music rather than the unimportant whys and hows. These days school kids who are the same age i was back then sequence tunes on dreamcast!(and know more about it all than me!), don't know if that takes away from it or not. I don't know if its possible to get into writing tunes using technology and still keep that very lucid kind of imagination when u listen to music and with working on ideas. i seem to b surrounded by so much cynisism on the course i'm on - seems to have got caught up in the bs...for example, we have a technician that lectures us time and again about *the* difinitive bass kick sound that we *should* be paying attention to if we were serious about music tech: frankie goes to hollywood's 'relax'....oh get over it man!!! that kind of one-up-manship environment is partly why i was thinking of doing the music composition BA instead of a music tech BA come september. that " missing chord" thing's got me thinking, seems to make a lot of sense!!

The important things that influence the way i hear music and get creative with it are state of mind. i've noticed make the most decisive on creative issues when i'm happy or in a good mood, think that's a basic psychology thing tho'. Also relaxing, going to clubs that play interesting diverse stuff, getting into a sub-paraletic state and absorbing ("learning thru' listening" as i think of it!) gets my cogs whirring and my emotion stirring (look see - i'm writing a poem!!!) and i get creative ideas starting. I'm not sure about that "no surprises in electronic music" point of view, maybe that's something to do with knowing technology inside out, maybe it's something to do with being too up close and personal with the gear all the time...but on a related note, i like the suprises u get when you hear a DJ who plays the most interesting and soulful records in a way that isn't always obvious, but builds in a progressive way (not talking about gradual increase in bpms into a gabba trance frenzy here! hehehe). I like to hear all kinds of textures when i go to clubs, i don't think i could stomach a whole nite of jungle for example. i love that element of suprise on the dancefloor, where u get a mixture of ppl who are into different things and one minute it's all funk and dirty maybe, then the next record takes it somewhere trippy-psychadelic, but maybe the funk element's still in there in the next tune, some kind of link or "DJ punctuation" if u like, so it makes sense-but not, if u get me...+ obviously, no holds barred in terms of genre, whatever works on the dancefloor. i heard some dodgy quote from quite a famous underground DJ as i was stood near the DJ booth in a club the other month..."i don't want to get a reputation of being the DJ that plays the record that DJ Shadow found", DJs getting caught up in that kind of club-scene cynisim/bollox doesn't help in getting ppl inspired to come to clubs. maybe i sound like an overenthusiastic young pup, but do i have a point or not? (apparenly, i have a few)

tangent on off gone a....shut up i de claire!!!

....now listening to: renegade soundwave 'renegade soundwave'(Leftfield Mix)/ Lo Fi Allstars 'Pony Pressure'
