As Nick posted before me, some of this is duplicate:
Saturday 10 November; arrived in drizzling Aberdeen around 8pm and met up with Nick King in the station pub. On to Andy & Darrens hotel for another quick beer and off to the venue (Club Lava). This was still quiet so we went next door for a few more drinks. In the meantime a huge queue had formed outside the club with people virtually queing around the block. Got into the club past the queue at which point Nick was hillariously asked by one of the punters "Are you the lead singer in 808 State?" Why not, after all the flyer only mentioned 808 State, not that it was a DJ gig.
The Club itself was a two-level cellar type venue with the DJs at the very back of the club on a sort of ramp that had to be climbed with a ladder. The lads were on at 1am and played what the night promised; old-skool. By this time the club was well over-full. The spinmasters played good old tunes, many from the XL-recording roster, e.g. SL2's On a Ragga Tip. Pacific was thrown on twice(!), once in original, once in 98 version as well as Cubik. Didn't take any photos here as 95 percent of the time the DJs were invisible, hidden by either the fog of the smoke machine or the flames of the fire-spitters who where doing some dangerous stuff on stage…
This was a top night but could have been better if it had not been for the terrible PA. It faded out whenever a certain peak was reached. So imagine just as a track was at it's top and the crowd were getting into a frenzy, the sound fades away. This was a bit disappointing for seasoned clubbers like Nick and myself, but the Scottish ravers didn't seem to mind and rocked on.
Everyone felt in need of a new head the next morning, so breakfast at Frankenstein's pub was just the right thing. Got on a bus to Dundee in mid-afternoon - to be continued…
